Myofascial release is a hands-on healing modality that specifically addresses the fascia. Fascia is a three-dimensional complex connective tissue matrix which threads itself throughout our body – surrounding our muscles, organs, nerves, bones, blood vessels – all the way down to the cell level. Everything in our body is held together and in place by the fascia. In addition to being flexible and adaptable, fascia is a very strong, connected web. When one area is strained or injured, the effects can be felt in distant areas of the body. This is why we may have pain in our knee that may have nothing to do with a knee injury, but everything to do with an injury to our lower back, or even our shoulder. The natural, fluid state of the fascia has been traumatized, causing it to harden and tighten.
In a MFR session, a gentle, sustained pressure is applied to points of restriction, allowing the connective tissue to release. Let’s use the example of cold butter as an analogy for how MFR works – if you were to press your finger into it sharply, you will merely encounter resistance without changing the surface of the butter. However, if you place your finger on the butter, applying gentle pressure, you’ll find you’re able to slowly sink into the stick of butter, melting into it. This is essentially what is happening when an MFR therapist works on the body.
MFR is very different from massage therapy, which involves continued gliding across the skin. It is the application of prolonged pressure (sometimes up to 15 min!) that enables the fascia to release, unwind and begin to reveal other areas involved in the pain pattern.
Because MFR works with the fascia as a whole, it is an important therapy to consider when other therapies have failed to resolve a pain pattern. This is because MFR works through layers to trace the strain or injury to its origin.
Dr. Marie Rodriquez has been fine-tuning this technique over the last several months in order to optimize the results for her patients. This is a great technique to discover and resolve the underlying causes of recurring musculoskeletal issues. Dr. Marie is available by phone or in-person for a free 15-minute consult to see if this would be effective for you.
