Say No to Colds & Flus! – Simple Ways to Strengthen Immunity

We can see fall everywhere with kids in school, pumpkins scattered about and the leaves falling off the trees. Fall is also the cold/flu season, so many of us wonder what we can do to stay healthy. Here are some good things for you to do to maximize your own immune system functioning:

• Reduce sugar and sweet intake and eliminate all sugared sodas

• Get enough rest/sleep. Inadequate sleep will decrease your immune system’s functioning. Increased levels are needed in times of high stress.

• Whole food concentrates like Juice Plus: This is the best antioxidant/preventative formula that we have found. Research shows that these products greatly enhance white blood cell levels and activity. It its equivalent to the nutrition found in 5-7 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. • Minimize exposure to stress and stressful events. There is no single category that will decrease your immune system more than long term stress. Minimizing stress does not mean not feeling your feelings, but rather to feel your feelings in the moment and releasing them.

• Moderate exercise will increase your body’s ability to get rid of toxins through sweat, lymph movement, and by decreasing stress.

• Maximize your intake of quality proteins, complex carbohydrates and multi-colored vegetables and fruits (Be careful of fruits such as banana with too much sugar)

• Take a good quality B-complex to increase your body’s ability to adapt to stressors and to support your immune system.

• Water-filtered or bottled (Alhambra, Aquafina are best)-1/3 to 1/2 ounce per one pound of body weight.

• Digestive system: ensure that your digestive system is working optimally. This is your first line of defense from foreign organisms and any dysfunction can lead to strain on other organs such as the liver and circulatory system. If your digestive system is off, make an appointment with your naturopathic doctor so that we can rebalance and ensure that you are healthy.

• Symptom Based Homeopathy: Many effective homeopathic remedies can be used for the symptoms of colds and flus. • Eliminate foods that you may be intolerant or allergic to. These foods wear down the immune system so it becomes unable to appropriately respond to “real� invaders. Common foods are wheat, cow dairy, eggs, corn, soy, sugar etc. If you don’t know what you may be sensitive to and are curious, please call the office to make an appointment.
